Lodge of Loyalty “A brief history”

It all started in 1974 following the exodus of other lodges from Queen Street when suggestions were aired from brethren concerned about it’s future with the possible formation of a new Lodge at Queen Street as many brethren were somewhat reluctant to leave in the first place. Three meetings were held initially, on the second Tuesdays of April, May and June, with W Bro John Elliot as Chairman and W Bro John Richard Bryant as Acting Secretary.

At the first meeting, W Bro Elliott who at the time was also Chairman of Queen Street hall management committee advised that the suggestion of a new lodge had been raised at their last meeting with a view to it being a benefit to Queen Street and with the aim of enabling younger brethren to attain the Master's chair more quickly. Although not stated there is evidence to the fact this would obviously also appease those brethren who had reluctantly been coerced into moving away from the building.

The name “The Lodge of Loyalty” was adopted on 14th May 1974, it being suggested by W Bro E Goldsworthy, PM, PPGD, Phoenix Lodge No.94. Agreement was made that “The London West End “ ritual would be adopted, with the Master being allowed to to allocate any work.

Fees were set as follows:

Founder member: £10 (Increased to £20 on 11th March 1975 in order to meet increased costs)
Initiate: £50
Annual Fee: £10
Joining Members: English Constitution, £5
Other constitutions: £15

Arrangements were made for the Lodge to have ten meetings a year on the second Tuesday of each month the exceptions being July and August, and the Installation to be in February. Permission was obtained from Phoenix lodge no.94, to use their Lodge regalia for the interim period, and social evenings were to be held in order to raise such monies to purchase our own equipment.

Ideas for a lodge logo were accumulated and Bro E W Burkhard produced five sketches and over a year passed before a decision was made to decide on the logo we use today. A Lodge banner was later beautifully made by Mrs Jamieson, mother of W Bro John Jamieson, PM, PPrJGW of Legion Lodge No. 8634 (Northumberland), who is now an honorary member of the Lodge.. The banner was presented to the Lodge by Bro David Williams at a ceremony of consecration and dedication conducted by Bro Rev, Kenneth L Stock, PrGChaplain on Tuesday 9th September 1980.

From the founders the officers for the consecration were selected with W Bro J Elliot, PM3216, PAGDC as Master. Bro D D Williams was Senior Warden, and went into the Master’s chair in1977. W Bro David served as ADC alongside W Bro George Willis for many years until standing down in 2007. The consecration of the lodge took place at the Masonic Temple, Burdon Rd., with R W Bro The Right Honourable Lord Barnard, T.D., Provincial Grand Master officiating, assisted by many distinguished brethren. All consecrating officers were elected as honorary members.

It was arranged the 1977 installation that the Ladies of the Lodge would serve at the festive board, continuing each year up to 2007, circumstances unfortunately ending the tradition.

The Lodge banner, previously mentioned was generously presented to the Lodge by W Bro David Williams, on 9th September 1980, the dedication given by Bro Rev. Canon Kenneth Stock, PrGChaplain.

The Lodge celebrated it’s 25th anniversary on Tuesday 19th October 2000 during the year of W Bro Stephen Hines as Master and with the attendance of a Provincial Deputation led by the Provincial Grand Master, R W Bro Dr.Alan Martin Davison. A special brochure was produced at this time with a much more detailed history and facts of the first 25 years which was put together for the event by W Bro Bill Byers. These brochures were presented to all those brethren in attendance at the event and others have been presented to new brethren on their initiation.

Under the Mastership of W Bro George Malt, 30 year celebrations were took place on Tuesday 11th October 2005 again attended by the Provincial Grand Master R W Bro Dr. Alan Martin Davison and accompanied by an official deputation.

At the time of writing of this historyl (March 2008), the lodge stands with a membership of 48, the average membership over the years at a steady 50. There is a strong core keeping things flowing, whereby we work hard and play hard and visitors are encouraged to attend and enjoy our brotherhood.
